Visitor Visa
A Visitor Visa, or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a stamp or label placed by Canadian authorities in your passport to authorize entry into Canada. It’s required for nationals of visa-required countries and can be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry, often valid for up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire

Who needs a Visitor Visa
- Individuals from visa-required countries planning to visit Canada for tourism, business, or visiting family and friends
- TRVs are distinct from eTAs (Electronic Travel Authorizations), which are required for visa-exempt travelers arriving by air.
- Workers or students also typically require a TRV (or eTA) in addition to their permit when entering Canada
Eligibility Process
To qualify for a Visitor Visa, you must:
- Have a valid passport or travel document from your country of nationality
- Be in good health and free from medical inadmissibility
- Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions, and not pose a security risk to Canada
- Convince the immigration officer you have strong ties to your home country (like a job, home, or assets) that will motivate your return
- Prove that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
- Have enough funds to support yourself during your stay, depending on its duration and your accommodation choices
Validity & Duration of Stay
- A Visitor Visa can be single- or multiple-entry, valid up to 10 years or until your passport’s expiration—whichever comes first
- At the port of entry, a border officer will determine how long you can stay—typically up to six months—and may issue a visitor record if needed.
