Key Features:

  • No Job Offer Required: Unlike employer-specific permits, you don’t need a job offer to apply.
  • No Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA): Employers aren’t required to obtain an LMIA for open work permit holders.

Who Can Apply for an Open Work Permit?

You may be eligible if you fall into one of the following categories:

  1. International Graduates: Graduated from a designated learning institution and eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
  2. Spouses or Common-Law Partners: Of international students or applicants under specific immigration programs.
  3. Family Members: Of individuals who have applied for permanent residence
  4. Temporary Residents: Including those holding a temporary resident permit or under an unenforceable removal order.
  5. Vulnerable Workers: Such as those experiencing abuse or at risk of abuse in their job.

Each category has specific eligibility criteria. It’s advisable to consult the official IRCC guidelines or seek professional advice to determine your eligibility .

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) to gain valuable Canadian work experience. This experience can be crucial for those seeking to apply for permanent residence through programs like Express Entry.

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a popular program that enables young adults from participating countries to live and work in Canada temporarily. Through IEC, eligible foreign nationals can obtain an open or employer-specific work permit without the need for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This makes it easier for youth aged 18 to 35 to gain Canadian work experience, travel, and immerse themselves in Canadian culture.

The IEC program includes three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op (Internship), offering flexible work opportunities tailored to different career and travel goals.

Foreign nationals who are sponsored by their spouse or common-law partner for permanent residence through the inland sponsorship process in Canada may be eligible to apply for an open work permit. This permit allows them to work for any employer while their permanent residence application is being processed. Applying for an open work permit requires submitting the inland spousal sponsorship application from within Canada.

The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) allows foreign nationals currently working in Canada to extend their work permit while their permanent residency application is being processed. To be eligible, applicants must have a valid work permit and have already submitted an application for permanent residence under an eligible immigration category. The BOWP provides continuous work authorization, helping avoid gaps in employment during the transition to permanent residency.
