Alberta

Alberta is a western Canadian province. Mountains, prairies, dry badlands, and extensive coniferous forests make up the geography. There are over 600 lakes in the region, as well as abundant mineral deposits. The Columbia Icefields are glaciers in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks in the west. Apart from the breathtaking landscapes, Alberta has had the highest per capita income in Canada in recent decades. It was 132 percent of the national average in 2016.

Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP):

Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program is an immigration program that nominates citizens for permanent residence in Alberta. Nominees must have the necessary skills to fill work vacancies or be preparing to purchase or start a company in Alberta. They must be able to support their families as well. The Alberta and Canadian governments are in charge of the initiative. If you are nominated through the program, you and your spouse or common-law partner, as well as any dependent children, can apply for permanent residence status. Applications for permanent residency are handled by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. Final decisions on these applications are often made by the federal government. AINP has streams for both workers and entrepreneurs.

Worker Stream

The AINP has two streams for foreign employees who live and work in Alberta or intend to do so:

Alberta Opportunity Stream

The Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS) is for temporary foreign employees who are already employed full-time in Alberta and have a full-time employment offer in a qualified occupation from an Alberta employer. Candidates must have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or be in possession of one of the LMIA exemption work permits. Candidates must also meet minimum qualifying requirements for residence and work permit form, profession, language, citizenship, Alberta job offer, and work experience.

Alberta Express Entry Stream

The Alberta Express Entry Stream requires Alberta to appoint a small number of eligible applicants from the Express Entry scheme of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. Candidates with close links to Alberta or who can contribute to the government’s economic growth and diversification goals may be asked to apply.

There are 2 steps in this stream:

  1. Candidates with a Government of Canada Express Entry profile receive a Notification of Interest (NOI) letter from AINP in their Express Entry profile. Only candidates who have received an NOI letter can contact the AINP to express their interest in this stream.
  2. These applicants are invited to apply by the AINP. Candidates decide whether or not they follow the assessment requirements and then file an application. Completed applications are added to a pool of qualifying applications for processing.

Entrepreneur Stream

There are three streams in the AINP for entrepreneurs who want to live in Alberta and buy or start a business there.

International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream

The International Graduate Entrepreneur Immigration Stream (IGEIS) permits Alberta to propose qualified international graduates from Alberta post-secondary schools who desire to start or run a business in the province.

Self-Employed Farmer Stream

This stream is for entrepreneurs with the financial resources and farm management skills to start a new farm in Alberta or buy an existing one.

Candidates must submit their application to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) for review, along with a planned business plan. The Alberta Agriculture and Forestry will engage with the AINP to ensure that the business plan is practical and viable, and that it serves the needs of Alberta’s agriculture industry.

Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Stream

The Foreign Graduate Start-Up Visa Stream (FGSVS) is an economic immigration programme for qualifying foreign educated graduates from outside of Canada who desire to start firms in Alberta.
