Open Work Permit
A work permit that isn’t connected to a specific company or place is known as an open work permit. A foreign national with a valid open work permit can work for several companies in various places within Canada. It’s worth noting that certain open work licenses may have extra criteria or limits that foreign nationals must adhere to.
Because of the flexibility they provide, open work permits are in high demand. While most work licenses are attached to a certain business, an open work permit allows a foreign national to work for any firm in Canada and to move around freely. Many foreign nationals will increase their candidacy for Canadian citizenship by earning Canadian job experience.
Open work permits are most commonly issued through the following immigration programs:
Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP):
PGWPs (post-graduation work permits) are open work permits granted to overseas students who have completed a program of study in Canada. PGWPs allows the bearer to work for any employer in Canada for as many hours as they choose. PGWPs are good for eight to three years and are a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
International Experience Canada (IEC):
International Experience Canada (IEC) is a collection of programs that allow young people from participating nations to come to Canada for a period of time to live and work. Foreign nationals who complete one of the IEC programs will be eligible to apply for a work permit in Canada without having to complete a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
Inland Spousal/Common-Law Sponsorship:
Foreign nationals who are sponsored by their spouse or common-law partner for permanent residency in Canada may be able to apply for an open work permit. To apply for an open work permit, the foreign national must apply for spouse sponsorship through the inland spousal sponsorship process from within Canada.
Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP):
- The Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) permits foreign nationals who are presently working in Canada to extend their work permit while their permanent residency application is being processed. Only individuals who have applied for permanent residency and have a valid work permit are eligible for the BOWP.
